For a start, temperatures have been dropping since the middle of the month. We haven't had temperatures higher than 32ºC (90F) this summer but especially at night it's getting colder every day and just before the sun comes up we now normally register 8ºC (46F) which is cold! For the vines this means the season is past it's peak and the grapes are starting to ripen. The first variety that started to change color and begin to ripen was Carmenère, although it's normally one of the last ones to be harvested. This is always a good moment to inspect the bunches and eliminate the ones that are most delayed. As it was, we decided to leave only one bunch per shoot, to make sure they all ripen evenly and completely. This is always a difficult decision, as you suddenly see lots of grapes on the vineyard floor, that can not be put back on the plant!&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;After that we had a look at the Syrahs, which was more or less the same story. The Petit Verdot just keeps falling over, so had to be ordered yet again with some bunches removed to tidy and uniform their aspect. Cabernet Sauvignon on the other hand has very few bunches so hardly anything had to be removed. Just a few leaves to allow the wind and sun to reach the grapes and avoid rot later in the season. The plants of Cabernet were made from cuttings from very old vineyards in Chile, so they are more heterogeneous and less fruitful than clonal selections. Bunches are very loose and small and the grapes are tiny. For our own wines that is just fine, as this means more concentration and less risk of rot, but I'm a little worried that we might not reach the volume of grapes that some of our buyers need to buy. My conscience is clear though, as I'm sure they'll have excellent quality this year.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The mediterranean varieties Garnacha (Grenache) and Mourvèdre were the last to start ripening and are about two weeks behind the rest of the vineyard. To give them a little help we are now eliminating bunches there as well, or reducing the size of very big ones. Next year we'll be pruning them a bit shorter to avoid having to go so many times through the rows to adjust the crop. However, as they're late ripeners, we'll just have to wait until the end of April to start harvesting there.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Our viticultural consultant dropped by yesterday and seemed happy enough (what a relief!). The plants have stopped growing but leaves are still looking healthy and green. He just urged us to irrigate a bit more go help the plants during these last two months before the harvest. The chilean government just declared a state of emergency for this region, as there is a lot of drought. Fortunately we still have all the water we need, let's just hope it lasts! &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;One of our buyers dropped by as well, together with a grower from Champagne who was visiting Chile. My neighbor is also from Champagne, but wasn't there. It is always interesting to exchange ideas with people from other areas, especially if they are so evidently successful at what they're doing. We only had to hedge once this year, as with irrigation we were able to control growth, whereas in the North of France they have to hedge three times and the pressure of diseases is much higher. I truly admire these guys. No wonder Champagne is so expensive!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;For company and a little extra security I got two dogs from the dog pound in Rancagua. They were both thrown away and were a bit shy at first, but they've adapted amazingly well. One of them especially enjoys splashing around in the irrigation canals that surround the vineyard. The other one only touches water to drink!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;It looks like next month is going to be a bit quieter, as we're now only waiting for the grapes to ripen, but I'll keep you posted. This has ensured vigorous and healthy growth to be able to ripen the crop later in the season. We've been spraying against fungal diseases a bit less than usual, and have stopped application of sulphur altogether. Even though sulfur is used in organic and biodynamic viticulture, it tends to burn the fruit when air temperatures are high. For the people in the vineyard it's also better, as the sulfur gets into your clothes and smells really bad! The team I've inherited is very good, as everybody seems to know what they have to do and what's expected of them. I certainly hope to keep it that way.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In the vineyard, the Cabernet is looking great. There were many clusters of flowers this spring, but fruit-set was rather low so the bunches are small and loose which is ideal to avoid rot later on, close to harvest. As a consequence, we didn't have to drop a lot of fruit to balance the fruit/shoot ratio. We stopped irrigating a few weeks ago, and the vines have stopped active growth as a consequence, focussing all their energy on the ripening fruit now. In most blocks we had to tip (hedge) the shoots only once, which saves labour. Since temperatures have been rather high the last few weeks, it's a great bonus not to have to go through the vineyards with a hedger all the time!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;We're now thinning the fruit on the Syrah, which is another story. Syrah seems to really like it here, and rewards us with an enormous amount of bunches, at least two per shoot, which is more than they can handle. In some of the blocks, we're eliminating about half the fruit there is, which is a shame, but necessary if you consider that the quantity of leaves we have if only sufficient to ripen about 8000 kg/ha. The same goes for Mourvèdre and Grenache. Since the soil of the vineyard they grow in is very poor, there was little growth in spring so we had to drop a lot of bunches very early on to leave the plants some energy to grow longer shoots. Next year we'll be trying a different way of pruning, to see if we can avoid this problem earlier on.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The Carmenère looked a little uneven, so here we applied the same principle: leaving only the amount of fruit every individual plant can really handle. We're applying cow's manure as well in those areas that we feel need a bit more "energy." We feel this is better for the plants and the soil in the long term than chemical fertilizers. It was provided by one of our workers, to keep the circle closed! The Petit Verdot, with it's dropping shoots, is a very messy grower and needed a lot of shoot positioning but is now looking tidier and growing well.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In the cellar thing have been quiet, as we've only been topping up barrels and racking a few barrels and tanks. This gave us time to fix the tasting room, which is being repaired and getting new paint. We've uncovered some beautiful doors as well, which have just been restored and give some extra "cachet" when we receive visitors, so whenever you have the time and the possibility, do come come and look us up.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;On  a personal note, I really love the house that came with the job. There's water running beside it, which is very peaceful to listen to in the evenings when I'm enjoying a glass of wine on my terrace, contemplating the vineyards and the mountains behind. What more can you want for!?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Next month we'll be bottling some of the 2010's, and the wines are looking very good. Al igual que en todas las cosas de la vida, nunca se dio por vencido, ya que era un convencido que en la vida hay que pelear por los seres queridos, por los ideales, y por las cosas que consideraba justas.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Siempre sonriente, llevaba la Viña en lo más profundo de ser. Le encantaba su campo, sus vinos, gozaba con cada de unos de los trabajadores, y creía firmemente, que los Vinos de Lagar eran simplemente, Los Mejores! &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Visionario para los negocios, emprendió el desafío de la Viña contra todos los pronósticos. De un dos por tres, arrancó las manzanas para poner las parras, las que cuidaba como si fuesen parte de su familia. &lt;/span&gt;Una vendimia dura, cansadora pero exitosa!!!!!! Así definió nuestro enólogo Francisco Bello la vendimia de este 2011, que acaba de finalizar. Al igual que el año pasado, se cumplieron todas las expectativas de la cosecha: se obtuvieron los rendimientos esperados, y la primavera más fría, sólo ocasionó la tardanza en la madurez en cepas como el Syrah y Grenache de entre 5 a 10 días.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Este año, también se aplicaron productos orgánicos en los cepajes más sensibles, con el fin de lograr mejores resultados, y se cosechó como siempre, exclusivamente a mano, seleccionando los mejores racimos. Esta es la feria más grande de vinos de América Latina, un verdadero referente del mercado internacional del vino.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Por primera vez, Lagar participó de este evento, junto a nuestro nuevo importador, Magnum. Así fue nuestro viaje a Capitán Pastene, lugar donde por primera vez, se hizo una presentación de los vinos &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;MOVI. &lt;div&gt;Por qué ahí? &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Porque como MOVI representamos distintos lugares de Chile, diferentes valles, dispuestos a unirnos para mostrar mejor a nuestro país. Y Capitán Pastene, un pueblo al sur del país, estaba de fiesta....... y no tenían vinos.....&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;La comunidad de Capitán Pastene celebra todos los años en marzo, un aniversario de la llegada de sus primeros colonos italianos. Directamente de la Emilia Romana, llegó un grupo de 88 familias a este rincón del mundo.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Y se quedaron en Chile, hicieron patria y se mezclaron con nuestra cultura. Sin embargo, nunca dejaron de lado sus costumbres, especialmente las culinarias..... Así como en Italia se comen las mejores pastas y jamones, es posible encontrarlas también en Capitán Pastene.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Así, la unión de pastas y vinos era inmejorable. Movi, y por supuesto Lagar de Bezana, se hicieron presente este año en su fiesta. Compartimos comida con vino, experiencias y vivencias...  Degustamos los vinos MOVI, y la comunidad de Pastene probó y se deleitó con mezclas nuevas y las últimas cosechas....&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Es una fiesta absolutamente recomendable! Por primera vez, el vino se pudo tomar  por copa en el hotel Atton de el Bosque, gracias a una especial campaña llamada "toma una copa de Vino en el Hotel Atton de El Bosque".&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;Esta campaña,  pretende fomentar el consumo de&lt;br /&gt;vinos por copa al público en general, a precios muy convenientes gracias a&lt;br /&gt;una maquina única en Chile, que se acaba de instalar en el Bar del Hotel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Este dispensador de Vinos de origen italiano tiene como novedad un&lt;br /&gt;exhibidor de 24 etiquetas, 18 vinos tintos y 6 vinos blancos, los que pudieron ser elegidos por el usuario mediante una tarjeta de pre pago y bajo la&lt;br /&gt;modalidad de autoservicio. MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 214px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jefXh-k6xZk/TOKp_fdU9wI/AAAAAAAAAB4/ZMglGYCfwhk/s320/Nuestros%2Bvinos.JPG" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Meninas e meninos:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;Estive na semana passada em mais um evento ProChile, cuja uma das principais metas, é mostrar os produtos chilenos, que tenham, e os que ainda não tenham importação aqui para o Brasil.Vinhos, azeites, produtos gourmet, destilados e até água, nesta edição estiveram presentes.Com a preciosa ajuda do escritório do ProChile em São Paulo, habilmente administrado por Andrés Prado e sua turminha de ótimos profissionais, a mostra deste ano trouxe até nós muitos bons vinhos que aguardam um importador para fazerem negócios.Um destes, a Viña Lagar de Bezana denominada Cult Wine, não sem motivos, agradou em cheio, aos olhos e ao paladar.Seus rótulos são verdadeiras obras de arte, e seus vinhos, também.Falando com Francisco Bello, winemaker da vinícola, fiquei sabendo do cuidado que dedicam às suas plantações.Situada aos pés da cordilheira do Andes, no vale do alto Cachapoal, rodeada pelo rio do mesmo nome, seus vinhedos, sua vinificação e até a rotulagem é toda manual.São produzidos 130.000 litros anualmente, produção das menores quando falamos do Chile, em sua propriedade de 57 ha, sendo distribuídos em parcelas específicas para que as melhores condições para cada cepa existam.São 41 ha de Cabenet Sauvignon, 15 ha de Syrah, com 4 clones distintos, e ainda uma pequena área com Petit Verdot, Carmenère, Tintorera, Grenache, Mouvedre e Viognier.Sua linha contempla três rótulos:-O Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2007 que leva pequena quantidade de Syrah, aromas de frutas e algo adocicado.-O Aluvión Gran Reserva Ensanblage 2007, como o nome diz, um corte das uvas Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Grenache e Mouvedre que variam de safra para safra, que para meu paladar foi o mais interessante até pela s variedades do corte, que lhe dão complexidade de aromas e paladar, ótima acidez e equilíbrio.-O Syrah Limited Edition 2007, que também é um corte, mas dos 4 clones da Syrah que cultivam, forte, opulento, elegante, equlibrado.Espero que os importadores que passaram pela mesa do Lagar de Bezana venham logo a trazê-lo para nosso deleite e gáudio, pois os vinhos são realmente muito bons e trazem o apelo dos belíssimos rótulos.Viña Lagar de Bezana&lt;a href="http://www.lagardebezana.cl/"&gt;http://www.lagardebezana.cl/&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Cuando la palabra Bicentenario es la más&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;usada en estos días,&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;queremos recordar y homenajear a todos aquellos que hacen posible la elaboración de vinos.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Porque la industria vitivinícola, es una de las pioneras de Chile, y una de las que más años lleva presente en nuestro país.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Hablar de bicentenario, es hablar de españoles, de independencia, de sabores y colores.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Hablar de vino, es también hablar de nuestro país, de nuestra idiosincrasia.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;200 años no es nada; pero en estos 200 años, hemos cambiado como país, como cultura. Por suerte las botellas con las ilustraciones del pintor chileno &lt;b&gt;Bororo&lt;/b&gt;, no llegaron vacías. Por el contrario, llegaron muy de acuerdo con lo que cualquiera puede esperar de un cambio de imagen; es decir, con un cambio por fuera y por dentro.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mi sensación de Lagar hasta entonces, era la de un proyecto pequeño, con grandes pretensiones de calidad, en un valle con mucho potencial, &lt;b&gt;el Cachapoal&lt;/b&gt;, pero que hasta ahora sus viñas han estado dormidas en sus demostraciones de grandeza (con muy contadas excepciones, como Altair y Anakena).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;El gran punto en contra de los vinos siempre tintos de Lagar era el verdor de las uvas, por lo tanto el verdor de sus vinos. Lo que desde sus primeras añadas se veía reflejado en vinos con mucha concentración, pero de taninos muy firmes en cuanto salían al mercado, poco de amables de beber jóvenes, y notas en nariz muy pirazínicas, o al odiado pimentón verde. Taninos que sólo con el tiempo de guarda en botella, lograban suaves.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Para saber más del por qué de estos cambios nos pusimos de acuerdo con &lt;b&gt;Cristóbal Undurraga&lt;/b&gt;(asesor enológico de Lagar desde el 2006), para probar juntos los vinos, y algo aún mejor, probarlos en vertical. Y eso hicimos en el segundo piso de esa linda casita de Lagar de Bezana, ubicada en plena avenida Los Leones, en Santiago.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;¿Curiosidad por saber cómo es esa casita que parece de muñecas por dentro? Yo también. Tiene el tamaño preciso para una casa de dos plantas, con áreas de servicio y sociales abajo más dos dormitorios y baño arriba; y claro allí están las oficinas de Lagar. Detrás de la pequeña casita sin jardín, hay un gran estacionamiento para Lagar y las varias –infinitas- radios de &lt;b&gt;Ricardo Bezanilla&lt;/b&gt;, el dueño del proyecto. También hay una bodega para la guarda en botella de sus vinos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="content" align="justify" style="font: normal normal normal 11px/normal Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); margin-top: 10px; margin-right: 20px; margin-left: 10px; "&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 9pt; font-family:Arial;color:#333333;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" src="http://www.planetavino.com/img/lagardebezana10_int2.jpg" align="left" /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="content" align="justify" style="font: normal normal normal 11px/normal Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); margin-top: 10px; margin-right: 20px; margin-left: 10px; "&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 9pt; font-family:Arial;color:#333333;"&gt;La degustación fue toda una revelación, primero porque el&lt;b&gt;Cabernet Sauvignon Aguacero&lt;/b&gt;, (ahora llamado simplemente Reserva por suerte, para evitar confusiones) fue de los tres vinos de Lagar en la versión más antigua que degustamos (la 2004) el que mejor parado estaba. Es cierto que ahí estaban las notas verdes pero el vino estaba fresco y firme, sabroso. &lt;b&gt;A $4.500 con seis años de guarda todo un descubrimiento&lt;/b&gt;. Para Cristóbal, no fue más que la mejor muestra de que el cabernet tiene un potencial espectacular en la zona y que seguirá trabajando para hacer algo aún más grande.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La gracia, en cambio de la versión del Cab Reserva 2007, la nueva que llegará con su lindo lifting a tiendas pronto, es que los taninos ya no tuvieron que esperar seis años para estar suaves y seductores. La razón de este cambio, que es visible también en las dos últimas cosechas de sus otros dos vinos (&lt;b&gt;la mezcla Aluvión y Lagar Syrah Limited Edition&lt;/b&gt;) es el gran trabajo que se ha hecho, junto al enólogo de planta&lt;b&gt;Francisco Bello y el asesor vitícola Roberto Pizarro&lt;/b&gt;, para bajar los rendimientos de producción de uvas de las plantas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cristóbal reconoce que cuando llegó a Lagar, y sintió esos aromas verdes comenzó a deshojar para exponer los racimos más al sol, pero la idea fue un gran error. Lo que hacía falta era bajar la cantidad de uvas que produce cada planta para que lograran llegar a la madurez antes de las lluvias de otoño. Como resultado, terminaron cosechando mucho más temprano y con fruta mucha más madura.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;De los tres vinos, el consentido del grupo de enólogos que trabaja en la bodega parece ser &lt;b&gt;Aluvión&lt;/b&gt;, y hay buenas razones. En el sitio web inglesa&lt;a href="http://www.nakedwines.com/" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(55, 108, 168); "&gt;&lt;span style="color:red;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;www.nakedwines.com&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, se vendió como avión en una modalidad nunca antes usada en el sitio, en verde (es decir antes de llegar el vino a UK). ¿Qué tiene de atrayente Aluvión? Un precio en el que cada día encontramos mejores cosas en Chile, los $9.000. Y por ese precio esta mezcla funciona perfecto (aunque si bien empezó en 2002 como Cabernet sauvignon y Syrah, ahora es más syrah que cabernet).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lo que han ganado además los vinos de Lagar a partir de la cosecha 2007 es elegancia, y este Aluvión lo muestra claramente. Con tres años, y recién saliendo al mercado, el vino es un cóctail de frutas negras, maduras, con gran cuerpo pero una especial suavidad y elegancia de taninos. ¿Y lo que viene? Aluvión 2008, ojalá se pudiera comprar en verde. Y es que la cosecha 2008 en Lagar es lo que se buscó, tener madurez y concentración en la fruta y no durante la vinificación.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;El Syrah Limited Edition 2007 (a $12.000)&lt;/b&gt; sigue el mismo camino. Concentración, madurez y taninos suaves. Lo que me llama la atención, al igual que sus versiones anteriores, es que no hay notas cárnicas, a tocino ni de alquitrán, en estos syrah, y la verdad no es la primera vez que me ocurre con los syrah de Cachapoal. A cambio, hay sí, mucha fruta negra, mucha.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Este cambio no todo, el equipo trabaja desde esta cosecha 2010 en hacer un gran vino, el súper premium, al cual entrarían nuevas variedades plantadas más recientemente, como &lt;b&gt;mouvedre, grenache, carmenère y petit verdot&lt;/b&gt;. Así lo indicó el enólogo encargado del campo, Francisco Bello, al hacer el análisis al término de la vendimia 2010.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;span style="mso-tab-count: 1"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;En medio de un difícil&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;comienzo de año, a raíz del terremoto del 27 de febrero, y de una escasez de mano de obra, se logró realizar una exitosa vendimia, la cual &lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;dejó muy satisfecho a todo el equipo de Lagar.&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="mso-tab-count: 1"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;“Si bien la vendimia estuvo un poco atrasada por la tardía primavera que hubo en el país, ésta fue todo un éxito, donde el clima nos acompañó en todo momento”.
